A Student Guide to London Dating
With a population of seven million and named as one of the financial capitals of the world, London’s every street seems to pulse with purpose and activity. Students studying here receive £2,000 more in loans than all other UK students due to the vast expense of life in the metropolis. Despite this extra money, however, affording anything but the necessities can be difficult for London students. The luxury of being able to take that special someone out on a surprise night of romance looks out of the question, unless you’re very clever and look in all the right places…
As socialising is a central part of the student lifestyle, there are always plenty of occasions for meeting new people. The size and diversity of London itself combined with the thriving local nightlife also throw up constant opportunities for meeting potential partners, and dating online is an ideal way to search through the vast city to find your perfect match. Once you’ve found a willing date, with a small budget the possibilities are not endless, but they are at least surprisingly extensive.
The traditional sit-down restaurant date, with the candle-filled wine bottle and deep plates of aromatic delicacies may seem like a dream to most students that only holds a reality in the distant future where their hard work will have finally paid off. But London is full of restaurants that recognise the hardship of studying and struggling youths and there are consequently many discounts and deals available. Vouchers for chain restaurants which include Giraffe, Las Iguanas, Zizzi and Ask are all currently available online for London students, some offering as much as 50% off.
If even with these discounts eating out looks too pricey, surprising your date with the culinary skills you’ve picked up as a student could leave them very impressed. Cheap but tasty recipes are easy to find all over the internet and an entirely self-created evening could have much more originality and flair than the most expensive restaurant. Just don’t bring out the pot noodles!
If you wanted to go for something a bit more ambitious or even daringly try going on to another activity after eating, London’s cultural hive also makes allowances for students. The cinema, another conventional choice, can be expensive nowadays especially when every other film is shown in enhanced high-definition 3D and you have to pay £3 extra for the glasses. But cineworld cinemas offer a special online deal for students, selling tickets two for the price of one from Monday to Thursday. Alternatively, if you’re lucky enough to be an Orange customer, Orange Wednesdays also offer two for one, meaning that tickets can be as little as £3 each.
For a more cultural date, many London theatres are keen for students to be among their audiences. ‘Student Standbys’ are theatre tickets that students can buy from the theatre on the day of the performance for a significantly discounted price, providing that there are free seats in the auditorium. Many theatres are involved in this scheme and it is definitely worth researching. ‘A night less ordinary’, another UK scheme, actually offers free theatre tickets for under 26 year-olds, though they tend to get snapped up very quickly.
The London Dungeons and Madame Tussauds are other fun dating ideas which also offer student discounts at the moment, or if you’re a little more refined, you could see the Philharmonic Orchestra for only £4 as a student. The possibilities are rife.
So, London dating can be frugal, interesting, cultural and, therefore, ideal for students. All you need is the internet, a printer and a dash of spontaneity!
